Return of the Silversides

For about five weeks a year, the caverns at my dive sites (Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto) are filled with tiny bait-fish called silversides.  The silversides come out in thousands (probably even the tens of thousands), and they pack into the caverns, forming a big cloud.  Other fish like tarpon, bar jack and barracuda then come into the caverns looking to grab dinner.  Devil’s Grotto and Eden Rock are great dives for most of the year, but during the few weeks when the silversides are out, they are, without exaggeration, among the best dives in the world.

Last week the silversides started to appear in Devil’s Grotto.  We are still early in the silversides season, but they are already starting to pack the caverns!  Tonight I went for a dive with my friend James after work, and I took some very cool videos, showing the silversides and how they move in the caverns, what it’s like to swim through them, and the tarpon trying to grab a bite.  Take a look!!!

This is just the start of the season for silversides (they haven’t even arrived at Eden Rock yet), so expect more cool videos and pictures to follow!
