Andrea and I have recently done a few shore-dives at a site called Orange Canyon. Since the original intent of this site was to share our diving adventures, I thought I’d post some pictures and videos from our dives. There were plenty of highlights!
During the course of three dives, we saw at least ten turtles. Seeing one turtle is often the highlight of a dive, and on these dives we saw at least three turtles per dive. It was turtle-riffic! Check out these pictures:
Great pictures, right?
As I said, normally seeing this many turtles would be the highlight of any dive, but these dives were fantastic, and there were plenty of other highlights. Even better than the turtles was a sighting of a free-swimming moray eel! Seeing an eel is not uncommon, but it is rare to see one swimming around on the reef during the day. I was able to catch it on video! Take a look — it is very cool:
And if this weren’t enough, the cherry on top of these great dives was a Spotted Eagle Ray! In my first ten months on Cayman, I have seen only one spotted eagle ray, and that was a very brief sighting from a good distance away. This sighting was in shallow water at the end of our last dive, and we swam with the eagle ray for about three minutes. I was able to take this great picture:
And not only did I get that picture, I got good video of the eagle ray in action!
These dives were great for Andrea and me. One of the hardest parts of being a scuba instructor is that the aspect of pleasure is often removed from diving — you are either busy teaching, or trying to keep your divers safe, or searching for things to point out to them. So it’s important to get some fun dives in to keep diving fresh and fun and to remind us why we enjoy diving so much. These dives were perfect for that!
We can’t wait until we have a day-off together again so we can go out for another dive!
